Make a Book Activity and No, David! Book Review

Book Review

by Kathy Porter

David Shannon wrote and illustrated an autobiographical picture book about his childhood. It’s hilarious and at the same time, rather poignant because he was frequently told no and scolded for his childish antics. Yet, the book was written in good humor with a touching ending. I was a school librarian back in the day. This book was outrageously popular and probably had more checkouts than Captain Underpants. However, there was a downside that caused me to keep it behind the checkout desk Certain mischief makers would look for the book on the S shelf and chase other kids around with the book open to the page where David is running down the street missing his clothing. (See the picture below) However, if someone asked for the book and promised to sit quietly with it, they were awarded a checkout.

The Make A Book Activity turns the negativity in No, David! to positive reinforcement, which makes this activity good for children, caregivers, and teachers.
