I perused my local library catalog for a book about lemonade to go with the activity below. Instead, I found a book about a lonely tiny canary that befriends a lemon hanging on a tree. Even though I created an activity about lemonade, I couldn’t help choosing this lemony-sweet bedtime story as its companion.

Trevor is a tiny yellow canary who desperately wants a friend. He notices a lemon in a tree. Even though the lemon doesn’t talk or react, the canary isn’t as lonely and builds a nest for his yellow buddy.

My favorite part is when they sing a duet. The canary sings the song and the lemon sings the ‘silences’. The truly best part is when Trevor is invited to fly south with some birds and learns what it’s like to have real friends.

  2. Mix up all of the cards and place them face-down in rows.

Different Variations:
  • For older children, place all the cards face up and match the sentences with the pictures. Decide which instruction. for making lemonade, would be at the top. Do you squeeze the lemon juice into a glass first, or cut the lemon in half?
